Professor Nikolai Grube is a German epigrapher. He supervised the design of the course „Maya Hieroglyphic Writing” and provided significant support in the first part of the project. He remains a co-tutor of the annual workshop and a consultant for the course.
He is widely known for important achievements in the field of Maya epigraphy. He collaborated with Linda Schele to organize Maya workshops aimed at indigenous communities in the Maya region. He and Simon Martin proposed that the numerous states that existed during the Classic Period (250-900 AD) in Maya lands were dominated by the two most powerful states, Calakmul and Tikal. He was also the editor of the book Maya: Kings of the Rainforest. Since 2014, Nikolai Grube has directed the Text Database and Dictionary of Classic Mayan project.
